So I’ve taken the step of going self employed!

I took the big step of going self employed in April this year as a bookkeeper and also providing business support. It’s been daunting and a big learning curve but I don’t have any regrets. It’s great being my own boss, and choosing when I work and how much work I take on. It’s even nicer when you get paid!

So what have I learned?

The first thing I have learned is don’t be afraid. You have the knowledge and experience and the people contacting you are not experts, and want you to to help them.

Be confident but don’t over-promise. For instance my first client was a limited company, and as a licenced bookkeeper I can’t file for a limited company at Companies House – I could prepare her books but she would have to pay an accountant to review and file. Once she understood this she was very happy to be my first client.

Do meet face to face

A simple phone conversation is not enough to understand enough about what the client wants, and how they have been keeping records before. I hopelessly under estimated how much work would be involved after my first phone call, it was not until I met her I realised how much work | would have to do.

Agree a contract and fee

The job might be small or large, but agree the terms and then confirm them in writing, especially when you are going to invoice and when you are going to be paid. Also agree realistic timescales and stick to them.

Keep lines of communication open

I am always happy to talk via my email address info@anneoliver.co.uk
